A rear-end crash left one man dead, one critically injured and caused a string of minor wrecks at 1604 and 281 early Saturday morning.

The fatal accident happened just before 5:30 a.m. when police said a man driving on 1604 crashed into the back of another car and was killed. The driver of that car got out to check on the first man and was run down by passing traffic.

EMS had to call AirLife to transport that critically injured man to University Hospital.

Investigators say after the initial accidents a series of minor crashes happened. They say five or six cars crashed trying to avoid the wreck site.

The medical examiner has identified the dead man as 48 year old John Rubalcava.
