A couple who run a popular San Antonio deli, the Uptown Deli, is homeless after flames gutted the north Bexar County home they were renting Tuesday night.
Surveying the damage to the home Wednesday morning, Jude Llora said he was just thankful that he and his wife and children escaped unharmed.
“That’s the important thing,” he said. "We’ve just got to rebuild.”
He credited fast work by firefighters for saving the home from burning to the ground.
Llora said he first noticed smoke coming from one of the home’s vents.
“Then the lights started flickering and I noticed there was smoke coming from the vents throughout the house and the next thing I heard (were) popping sounds,” Llora said.
He said that most of the family’s belongings inside the home were destroyed.
“The Red Cross is helping us now,” Llora’s wife, Patty, said. “But right now, we don’t know where we’re going to live.”
The county fire marshal is investigating the blaze with an eye toward an electrical short as the cause.
No damage estimate was immediately available.
