SAN ANTONIO -

Police are searching for two car burglars after the owner of the truck they were trying to break into fired shots at them.

The shooting happened at the TGIF parking lot off State Highway 151 and loop 410, in the northwest side of the city, shortly before 1 p.m.

Police said the two victims were inside having lunch when a waitress told them someone was breaking into a truck in the parking lot.

The customers looked outside the window, recognized the truck as their own, and ran outside.

The two customers were armed with handguns and started shooting at the two thieves after they hopped in a gold SUV and sped away, according to Sgt. Steve Priore with the San Antonio Police Department.

"The two victims got up, came outside, identified themselves, yelled at them," said Sgt. Priore. "They are concealed handgun permit people, they took out the weapons fired shots at the vehicle to prevent the consequence of theft."

Sgt. Priore said the men reported that they fired about four or five shots, and that they did hit the vehicle. But it's not clear if anyone inside the getaway SUV was hit.

The two truck burglars did manage to get away with about two handguns and two rifles, which they took from the customer's truck.

Sgt. Priore said those customers had guns for hunting season and that it appears that they will not face charges.
