Paralyzed road rage victim returns home
Alamo Heights High School cheerleaders, along with family, friends and neighbors, stood on the deck of Eddie Moreno's newly renovated and expanded home, giving him a resounding welcome home Monday as he arrived on hospital gurney in an ambulance.
His family's home has expanded to 2,500 square feet and retrofitted to suit his medical needs thanks to at least 300 donors, said Vanessa Rodriguez, a family spokeswoman.
Rodriguez said the community was moved by the fact Moreno was an innocent victim of road rage, critically wounded as he sat in the back seat of a vehicle.
The Alamo Heights basketball player was left paralyzed from the neck down and on a ventilator, Rodriguez said.
Stella Moreno, Eddie's aunt, said many of the contributors had never met Moreno yet they were inspired by her nephew's strength and determination.
Moreno said the home was re-designed to allow her nephew more mobility with its wider doorways, no door jams and wood floors.
"He has the ability to not just be confined to his room," she said.
Moreno said the entire family is grateful for the compassion and generosity that has made Eddie's homecoming possible.
"We thank everyone for their helping hands, their giving hands and most of all their praying hands," she said. "We needed all their prayers."
