A pedestrian died when she was struck by a car while crossing Highway 90 Eastbound between Loop 410 and Military Drive Thursday morning, police said.
San Antonio police said the driver of a pickup truck saw the woman on the highway and slowed down.
A the driver of car behind the truck did not know why the other driver had hit the brakes.
"He made the lane change, the victim darted out. He struck the victim. It's very unfortunate, but at this point, it just appears to be an accident," San Antonio police Officer Matt Porter said.
Porter said the victim died on impact.
The driver of the car stayed on scene and was not expected to face charges, Porter said.
"Any time that you're crossing the middle of the highway, you're putting yourself at a great risk. A few blocks down is an underpass. It would be more safe to just go underneath that underpass and cross there," Porter said.
Residents who live near the scene of the accident said people regularly run across the highway to get to shops on the other side.
Darnell Dotson called the area a death trap for walkers, but said he wouldn't walk out of the way to cross Highway 90.
"I've crossed just to get to the other side, and I don't know why people get hit, you know, because if you just pay attention to where the cars are coming from, you can pretty much gauge it," Dotson said.
Police don't believe Vera saw the car that hit her until it was too late.
The east and westbound lanes of Highway 90 between Loop 410 and Military Drive were shut down for a few hours while officials investigated the accident, but reopened just before 9 a.m.
