Up and down South Park Mall, stores brimming with jewelry, chocolates, clothing and more, beckoned shoppers still looking for that perfect Mother’s Day gift.
Yet when asked, moms at the mall were nearly unanimous in what they “really” want for Mother’s Day on Sunday.
“I want to spend time with my family and my kids. That’s what I want,” said Jennifer Barrios.
“Just for my children to be happy and healthy, and just that,” said Cindy Barrientes.
Sylvia Reyes said her only child, a daughter in her 30s, has showered her with gifts through the years.
“Massage, nails, pedicure, even a trip,” Reyes said.
Yet she said her daughter takes time out of her day to call her at least once a day.
Reyes said for her, the giving is year-round.
“Being together and sharing every day, not just Mother’s Day,” Reyes said.
Ruby Gonzales said she is scheduled to spend her special day as a hospital patient, but her husband and their young son will be at her side.
“I want them with me,” Gonzales said.
Her husband, Xavier, said he already had that in mind, but, “I have a few surprises for her she don’t know about yet.”
Alicia Ollervidez said Mother’s Day is a day for her family to remember the loss of her own mother.
“We go the cemetery and take her mariachis,” she said.
But her daughter, Sarah, said she wants to give her mother a special token of her love and appreciation.
She said, “I want to give my mom something nice, like flowers or a ring.”
