PLEASANTON, Texas -

Rebekah Florez, the 19-year-old UTSA student who lived for nearly a week after doctors took her off life support, has passed away.

Florez’ brother, John, said she died Wednesday shortly after she was transported from a Houston hospital to Pleasanton.

Xavier Flores, Rebekah’s other brother, said the community had rallied around his family, coming together in a prayer vigil that attracted 600 people.

Florez said his family, which had been praying for a miracle, has now found peace after a tumultuous week.

“As much as we wanted a miracle, we felt she wasn’t free. And now she is,” said Florez.

Florez’ family said she was a proud graduate of Pleasanton High School, where she was a three-sport athlete, and voted Homecoming Queen.

Her brother say she was also strong in her faith, and active at Hosanna Baptist Church in Poteet.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday at First Baptist Church in Pleasanton.

Community members are also organizing a plate sale benefit to raise money to help with the family’s medical expenses.

The benefit will be at El Castillo Restaurant in Pleasanton, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
