SAN ANTONIO -

San Antonio police have arrested a hired contractor who they believe went on an unauthorized spending spree using his customer’s credit cards and personal information.

Benjamin Mendoza, 36, was arrested Tuesday on several charges, including credit card abuse. An arrest affidavit stated that his wife also is a suspect in this case.

According to the affidavit, a 66-year-old woman told police she hired Mendoza last fall to remodel her home.

She gave him a credit card a short time later so that he could purchase materials for the job, the affidavit stated.

Last month, the woman filed a report with police saying that Mendoza had been making unauthorized charges with the card and purchases with her personal information.

The woman told investigators Mendoza and his wife had been using the card she gave him, as well as one he did not have permission to use, to pay bar tabs, utility bills and buy items.

At one point, she said, he also signed her name to paperwork for the purchase of a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The victim said Mendoza made some of the purchases, including the motorcycle, while she was in the hospital.

The affidavit stated that Mendoza later returned the motorcycle after the victim’s brother contacted him and told him to do so.

Although the affidavit shows Mendoza’s wife is a suspect, it does not appear she has been arrested yet in connection with this case.
