SAN ANTONIO -

San Antonio police said they’re following leads, hoping to catch up with the person who shot and killed a man on the West side and wounded a sleeping toddler.

The 2-year-old girl was inside a home in the 200 block of Remolino Street that was sprayed with bullets around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The man, identified as Joe Richard Santos, 30, was shot while standing in the street nearby, talking on a cell phone, the neighbors said.

Detectives at the scene said the shooting was the result of an earlier dispute at another location nearby. Neighbors said Santos lived behind the toddler’s home.

“I heard, like, 30 gunshots,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. “When I came outside, I heard somebody moaning and I looked and the guy was thrown right there by the fire hydrant. And I called the cops."

The neighbor said he and his roommate, Javier Canales, were the first to find Santos. He said it appears shots were fired at Santos first, then into the home down the street. Detectives at the scene, however, said it happened in the opposite order.

Canales said either way, it was too late for the man by the time help arrived.

"He was just gasping for air. That was it. He wasn't talking (or) doing anything," Canales said. "The violence happens (in this neighborhood) all the time. But it's just sad that the little girl got shot. After all, she's a baby."

The toddler was taken to a hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery. An unidentified family friend said she is expected to recover.

It turns out she wasn’t the only unintended target of the gunfire.

Some of the bullets also shattered the back window of a truck that belongs to Canales’ roommate.

“It got shot and my dog house got shot. Luckily, my dog didn’t get shot,” said the roommate.

Detectives early on said Santos is the father of the toddler. However, a friend at the family’s home said the two are not related.
