Law enforcement agencies from across the state are promoting the “Move Over" initiative, which reminds drivers to vacate the lane closest to a responding officer or emergency personnel.
The initiative, is aimed to educate the public about the “move over” law, which took effect in September 2003.
If unable to vacate a lane, the law states a driver must slow down to 20 mph under the posted speed limit.
“A lot of folks are just not aware of it, but hopefully this effort will bring it to people's attention,” said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.
According to a spokesman for SAPD, between 1999 and 2011, 175 Texas police officers have been killed in the line of duty when a driver failed to move over, as now required by law.
Beginning Oct. 15 through Nov. 2, there will be an increased law enforcement presence on Texas roadways who will be looking for offenders.
