Anthony Martinez, 13, from Poteet, is in critical condition after a car hit him near his house on FM 476 near Oakview Drive in a rural area of Atascosa County.
It happened around 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
"What I heard is like a big bump, like the tire had blown out," said Amalia Gurrero.
She didn't see the wreck, but saw the white car that hit Martinez come back to help.
"My husband said, 'Somebody's in the street,' so I ran and the little boy was there," Gurrero said.
Martinez was unconscious and bleeding, she said. He was lying in one spot, and his glasses and shoes were hundreds of feet away.
He was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital for treatment.
"I feel sorry. ... I just pray God that the little boy survives, because he was (in) very bad (shape)," Gurrero said.
Several neighbors in the area said the number of accidents near that spot has been increasing. They've been fearing something like this would happen.
"It makes me very nervous, because there's a lot of kids around here, and I've got two grandkids. I mean, people drive very fast," Mary Marroquin said.
It's not clear whether speed played a role in the accident that injured Martinez.
