Constable Robert "Mike" Blount is hosting a community event at Comanche Park Saturday, in what is just the latest attempt at garnering community support to fight crime on the east side.

“We’re never going to be able to stop all crime, but we want people to feel like they’re living in a community with other people committed to safety,” said Blount.

It’s a message that has been pushed for some time now by everyone from San Antonio police Chief William McManus to former Bexar County Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz.

Whether it has worked, however, is up for interpretation.

Crime on the east side decreased a few percentage points from 2011 to 2012, according to police statistics.

Violent crime, however, remained relatively consistent.

“I think a lot of people that might be afraid to come forward to report crime need to know there are safe avenues to do so,” said Blount.

He said he hopes this weekend’s event will foster stronger community ties and alleviate some of that fear.
