A job training program in cutting-edge technologies will soon be available through the use of a $2.5 million Skills Development Fund grant from the Texas Workforce Commission.

The program is the result of a partnership between Rackspace Hosting and Alamo Colleges.

“At first, we have to develop the work, so it will be only Rackers in there,” said Lanham Napier, Rackspace Hosting CEO. “But over time, the Alamo Colleges plan to share that in their curriculum so that anybody can participate.”

The program will lead to Rackspace Hosting jobs in the field of cloud-based technologies in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas.

“They’ve had a lot of challenges hiring local talent because the skills sets aren’t there,” said Dr. Bruce Leslie, Alamo Colleges chancellor. “So they’ve been importing people and we’re working closely to try to change that dynamic."

Napier said numbers alone validate the need for the training.

“Literally 1.7 million jobs went unfilled in this field last year,” he said. “Humanity needs to develop these skills to handle this type of technology and this program is a step in that direction.”
