SAN ANTONIO -

Not to be a mood-killer, but how much is that bouquet of red roses for your sweetheart going to cost you?

A check at a few florists and the grocery floral department revealed a range of prices, depending on whether you want them arranged and how big and long-stemmed you want the flowers to be.

At Uptown Flowers, 202 Broadway, they were getting ready for a blooming Valentine's business.

A professionally-designed dozen roses is priced at $95 plus delivery.

At Allen's Flowers and Gifts on McCullough, a large arrangement of 1 dozen long stems is $100 plus delivery. Or, for $59.99 you can pick up a bunch of 25 long stems and do-it-yourself.

"The roses are magnficent," said manager Lisa Allen. "They are all from Ecuador. They are big and showy. We have 24 colors, and we'll have 12,000 roses in here by Monday morning."

For those looking for love on a tighter budget, HEB at Lincoln Heights has a dozen, slightly smaller roses for as low as $15.

"I recommend the customer go and speak to one of our florists and say, 'This is what I want to spend, and this is who I'm giving it to'," said Joe Don Zetzsche, head of HEB's floral departments.

Zetzsche said they can custom-make arrangements to fit any budget.

And, not to forget the guys, HEB gift-wrapped a six-pack of Shiner Bock, chocolates and a beef stick for $22.
