River North area seeing development
Hotel, office space going up near Museum Reach
Tim Sanford has waited a long time to see the 131-room Wyndham Garden hotel take shape along the San Antonio River near 9th Street and Avenue B.
Bourbon Street Seafood kitchen has already leased out restaurant space in the property.
"We started in July 2006, bought the land in July 2007," said Sandford, manager of the Paradigm Hotel Group. "We spent time with the San Antonio River Authority and the Museum Reach group particularly, and felt like they were going to do a great job and I think it's a testament that they have done a great job."
More than three years after the Museum Reach of the river opened up, much of the new development has centered around the terminus near the Pearl Brewery.
The hotel is one of the few new construction projects closer to downtown.
"I think it will be a great addition to the River north area," said Sanford.
It's an addition that's welcomed by businesses nearby, including Guillermo's Deli, which relocated from the downtown YMCA that shut down in June 2009, to a new location just a block away on McCullough.
"It was a calculated move on our part to be a little part of the development of the North side of downtown," said owner William Garza. "We're getting a lot of tourists, we're getting a lot of people that walk and we're getting a lot of downtown residents."
Foresight has been a blessing for Garza and Generations Federal Credit Union. The local financial institution recently opened its new downtown branch at North St. Mary's and Euclid nearly five years after buying the land.
"We really, really had a feeling that this are would revitalize and regrow to what it once was," said Ashley Harris, associate vice president of Generations FCU. "One of the things we want to do in this area is help this area so we continue to reach out to not only the small business owners but also the residents in this community to see what we can do to revitalize this area."
