Two men were arrested after a robbery spree led to a shooting and police chase in northwest San Antonio early Wednesday morning.
The first robbery was reported at the Valero on Fredericksburg Road at Datapoint Drive around 3 a.m.
Investigators say the suspects -- identified Wednesday afternoon as Aaron Rizo, 20, and Roy Beltran, 17 -- then robbed a Balcones Heights Whataburger up the road.
The pair then targeted a nearby Shell station, but were spotted by a private security guard who began to follow them, police said.
The suspects opened fire on the security guard with a shotgun. Her vehicle was hit, but she was not. The guard said she returned fire and notified authorities.
"Because of her help, we were able to stop a crime spree that was occurring tonight. Yes, they were obviously out there robbing places, so it's good that we were able to get the information to get there," said Balcones Heights police Chief Henry Dominguez.
San Antonio and Balcones Heights police both began to chase the men down Interstate 10 until the robbery suspects finally came to a stop in the 200 block of Oakdale at the Sage Crossing Apartments, where police quickly arrested both men.
"We have a good working relationship with the San Antonio Police Department. We've always been able to count on them when we need assistance. Same for us, we give them assistance, as well. Because it's multi-jurisdiction, it's not an issue, it's just a matter of who files the actual charges, and where they occurred," Dominguez said.
Rizo has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His total bond is $200,000.
Beltran has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of failure to ID/fugitive giving false info. His total bond is $202,000.
It was unclear whether the suspects stopped due to a tire blowout or if they surrendered. No injuries were reported from the robberies or the shooting.
