SA DREAM Benita Veliz activist gives historic speech at DNC
Veliz: 'President Obama fought for the DREAM Act to help people like me'
Local DREAM activist Benita Veliz made history at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night by becoming the first illegal immigrant to address a national political convention.
Veliz took to the stage in Charlotte, N.C. to discuss the opportunities she has been given because of President Obama.
"I had to live my entire life fearing being deported. President Obama fought for the DREAM Act to help people like me," Veliz said.
Veliz was brought to San Antonio at the age of 8, became valedictorian of Jefferson High School at the age of 16 and earned a double major at St. Mary's University.
Her address comes on the heels of President Obama's decision to grant deferred action and work authorization to millions of illegal aliens under the age of 31.
