The San Antonio Food Bank hopes to collect an additional 2,000 turkeys before Thanksgiving to help bring a holiday meal to 58,000 South Texas residents.

"We just about distributed 8,000 turkeys but need another 2,000 turkeys to come in so that we can make sure no one goes without this Thanksgiving," said Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank.

The Food Bank distributes about 5 million pounds of food every month but Cooper said the holiday season adds to their usual demands. He said helping needy families enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner goes beyond physical needs.

"Hunger doesn't know a holiday but it's this meal that's coming up on Thursday that's more nourishing to the soul and body," he said.

Residents have multiple ways to give. Food items including perishable items can be delivered to the Food Bank at 5200 Old Highway 90 West during business hours.

Donors can also go online to purchase turkeys and use their new virtual shopping program which is a kid-friendly way to donate.

It features a woman with a shopping cart moving down a virtual aisle where you can choose which items to purchase.

"We're also in need of anything else that compliments a Thanksgiving meal," added Cooper. "Stuffing, cranberry sauce any of that stuff we can use."

The Food Bank is accepting frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving through Wednesday.
