SA boy, 9, cultivates honey for Deep Eddy Vodka
Bo's Bees also available at Cooper's Meat Market, Bolner's Meat Co.
Bo Dewees, 9, has been running his Bo’s Bees honey operation out of the backyard of his family home for three years, but now he’s hitting the big leagues and has cut a sweet deal with Deep Eddy Vodka.
The Austin-based company’s Sweet Tea Vodka says they were looking for a locally grown honey for its San Antonio bottles, and Bo’s Bees seemed like a perfect fit.
Cofounder and CEO of Sweet Eddy Vodka Clayton Christopher says, “We are the only Texas vodka that uses all local ingredients from Texas, so we got real excited that there was a kid in San Antonio making honey.”
Christopher says there was nothing in particular about the honey’s taste, but the fact that it is locally grown naturally was the reason Bo Dewees earned the contract.
Other Texas cities have other local providers.
As for the Woodridge Elementary student, Bo admits beekeeping started off rough.
“I’ve been stung like 30 times,” he said. But he admits the stings are less painful and less frequent today.
“It takes like a day, possibly a day and a half, to fill up the bottles and put stickers on them,” Bo says of the work involved.
And that work in increasing.
Now that he’s producing a couple hundred gallons of honey a year, he is expanding and will be moving the hives from his backyard to a more rural location in San Antonio.
His honey is also sold to the San Antonio Country Club, Cooper's Meat Market and Bolner's Meat Co., as well.
Bo’s father, Ed Dewees, says he tries to stay out of the way and give Bo the full responsibility of the business.
Still he acknowledges, “He is nine.”
