Communities across San Antonio attended barbeques, car shows, games and much more Tuesday as part of National Night Out, an evening dedicated to coming together to fight crime. The events help neighbors get to know each other and become more informed about their surroundings.

On the west side, neighbors organized a walk in Benavides Park, to show that it can be a place for the community to gather together safely.

“This park is normally known for drugs and prostitution,” said Natalia Tovar, who attended the event. “We're trying to clean up this neighborhood, and we’ve got kids playing on our playground today."

About 1,500 people came to the National Night Out event at Harlandale Stadium on the south side. Volunteers put on skits to demonstrate the negative effects of neighborhood crime.

The event also included numerous booths where volunteers passed out information on everything from health care, to getting kids active in sports, with the goal of helping drive down crime by keeping the community informed and involved.

At the East Side Boys and Girls Club, neighbors with roots there gathered to help plant a solid future.

“The younger children get a foundation and find out the right way to go so that the older they get, that won’t be the road that they choose,” said Goldie Hill, who has been attending the Boys and Girls Club since 1984.

Tuesday was the 29th annual National Night Out sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.
