SA presidential fundraiser sold out
Donors will pack ballroom at HBG Convention Center
President Barack Obama returns to San Antonio Tuesday for his first visit since winning the White House in 2008 for a midday fundraiser at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
State Rep. Joaquin Castro, who will be riding in the presidential motorcade, said the tickets that ranged from $250 to $5,000, are sold out for the event that is expected to attract 1,200 to 1,300 political donors.
“It means people are really excited about the President’s visit. They support a lot of the initiatives he’s been working on,” Castro said.
Castro, who is running for the 20th Congressional District, said his brother, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, also will accompany President Obama on Tuesday as the campaign’s national co-chair.
In 2008, then Illinois Sen. Barack Obama made three campaign stops in San Antonio, and he followed the Democratic primary results from Municipal Auditorium.
Curt Nelson, Bexar County Republican Party chairman, said the Presidential visit serves as a reminder, “to look back over the last four years to determine are we better now than we were at that point in time.”
Nelson said GOP nominee Mitt Romney is likely to win the Lone Star State.
“Certainly, the Republicans have done very well over the last number of years,” Nelson said.
However, Castro said he expects Obama will make another strong showing in Bexar County.
“He carried San Antonio in 2008 and we think he’ll do it again in 2012,” Castro said.
Castro said harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric during the Republican primary shows the party is out of step, “not only with the Latino community but with what is a very diverse America.”
However, Nelson said the need for jobs and a stronger economy are issues that transcend race, “not only here in Bexar County but even the nation.”
After his stop in San Antonio, President Obama will travel to Austin for another fundraiser.
