SA residents help 'Stuff the Bus'
HEB shoppers helping kids with school supplies
With just weeks away from the start of school, on Friday, HEB shoppers spent money on groceries and school supplies helping kids in the community be prepared when the doors open.
"It’s very important for kids to start school with school supplies," said India Chumney, the director of resource development for Communities and Schools.
That organization has been collecting supplies for 19 years.
Last year, they collected over $386,000 worth of supplies that went to kids in eight different San Antonio-area school districts.
Just the basic list costs about $50 and for some families, that makes a difference.
"You have a family that has three children, you all of a sudden make a decision: Do they pay the utility bill or do they buy school supplies?" Chumney.
If you missed out on Stuffing the Bus on Friday, you can still help through the checkout stand campaign with $1, $3, or $5 donations.
That campaign last through Sept. 5.
Carol Lawrence was one of the hundreds of shoppers donating supplies on Thursday.
"I don’t know where in the community it's going, but it’s out (in the) community and I like doing that, " said Lawrence.
