KSAT 12 News has confirmed that a woman who recently moved from San Antonio to Denver was killed during the mass shooting at a Colorado theater Friday morning.

The parents of Jessica Ghawi, 25, informed KSAT of her death over the phone around 5 a.m.

They say she moved to the Denver area about a year ago. Some of Ghawi's family members are en route to Colorado.

Among those on the way to Colorado is Ghawi's brother, Jordan. He is live-blogging his trip there on his own blog, which we've linked here.

A friend visiting Ghawi, Brent Lowak, 27, of Bulverde, was wounded in the shooting. Lowak's mother told KSAT 12 News that he underwent surgery but was expected to recover. Lowak's father, Larry Lowak, spoke to KSAT's Katrina Webber Friday morning prior to leaving for Colorado. You can read that report and watch an interview with Larry Lowak here.

Two years ago as a UTSA student, Ghawi was an intern at Ticket 760 Radio for afternoon sports talk show host Mike Taylor.

He said remembers her as bubbly, energetic and funny.

“Her silliness would literally drive us crazy, but that’s what we liked about her,” Taylor said.

He said the first time she tried to interview a San Antonio Rampage hockey player, she learned the hard way not to wear high heels on the ice.

Taylor said she wound up falling three time. Humorous though it may be to watch on a YouTube video, he said it helps him cope with Ghawi’s death.

“I can’t imagine what her family is going through and how they deal with it,” Taylor said. “My way of dealing with it is remember her for who she was and not what happened to her.”

Nate Lundy, program director at the radio station in Denver where Ghawi interned said, "Jessica was a wonderful person with a beautiful soul. She was an aspiring sportscaster who had moved to Denver to pursue her dream and was well on her way. She interned here at The Fan, and as an avid hockey fan she was excited to cover the Colorado Avalanche on behalf of the station. She will be missed by anyone who had the chance to spend time with her and her infectious personality. My thoughts and prayers are with her family."

Ghawi also interned KABB-TV in San Antonio prior to moving to Colorado.

Dan Weiss, the announcer for the San Antonio Rampage, worked closely with Jessica and has been tweeting about her. This link has a YouTube video of her interviewing a Rampage player.

This wasn't the first time that Ghawi had been involved in a shooting. In June, she narrowly escaped a shooting in a mall in Toronto. She blogged about the incident, which you can read about here.

“She blogged about how life is sacred and you never know when you’re time is going to come,” Taylor said. “She was going to dedicate her life to her family, friends, and make sure she appreciates life, and then this happens.”
