SAISD: Interim superintendent yet to be decided

SAN ANTONIO -

According to a San Antonio Independent School District representative, there is no firm timeline as of yet in the selection of an interim superintendent to fill in since Robert Duron announced his retirement on Monday.

Duron and the SAISD board parted ways in the wake of a rocky relationship that had continued since his hiring in July 2006.

Leslie Price, SAISD spokeswoman, said the board is expected to decide on an interim before naming a new superintendent.

Ed Garza, board president, said in a statement: “It is the goal of the board to have a new superintendent in place by this summer.”

Garza also said the board will discuss the process as early as Thursday during a work session, and at next Monday’s special board meeting on another matter.

Garza said the board's rocky relationship with Duron had no relation to the recent uproar over pro soccer at Alamo Stadium.

"The discussion with (Duron about) looking out for the best interests of the district started before Alamo Stadium," he said.

Another reason for Duron’s unpopularity with the board, Garza said, was that new members with different outlooks have been elected since Duron was hired.

Despite past “unfavorable” ratings by the board, Price said Duron will have a new role at his same salary of $266,494 through mid-February when his contract ends, or sooner, if Duron finds other employment.

Once the interim superintendent is on board, Price said Duron will become executive director for research and special projects for the yet-to-be scheduled bond election.

Price said the next bond issue will help pay for further renovations at 13 schools targeted by the district’s long-range plan in advance of other schools closing.

She said so far the first phase has resulted in improvements at five campuses.
