Karl Nicholas, a third-grade teacher at Stewart Elementary in the San Antonio Independent School District, has been arrested after a 9-year-old girl claimed he slapped her in the face.

The girl’s parent reported the incident to SAISD police Wednesday.  However, it allegedly happened Monday in Nicholas’ classroom.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that Nicholas refused to give a statement at first, telling the school principal he planned to resign because knew he was “going to jail.”

Investigators said Nicholas later admitted that he struck the girl for misbehaving, the affidavit stated.

The girl told investigators that Nicholas approached her at her desk Monday and scolded her for arguing with a classmate.

She said she then dropped her pencil and while picking it up, accidentally hit Nicholas on his hand, the affidavit stated.

The girl said she apologized to Nicholas, but he didn’t believe her and slapped her hard, across the face, the affidavit stated.

She also told police her teacher dragged her by her arm toward the door to lock her out of the classroom, but a school counselor happened to be in the hallway, the affidavit stated.

Nicholas then turned the girl over to the counselor, who brought her to the principal’s office, the affidavit stated.

Police said they questioned about a dozen other students who were in the classroom about the incident.

Nicholas was arrested Thursday on a charge of injury to a child.
