SAISD testing vacant house on new property for drugs
Parents voice concern to school board
As the San Antonio School District works to expand a playground at one of their campuses, some parents are voicing concerns.
That's because the property purchased for the expansion includes what some parents are referring to as an old drug house.
Leslie Price, SAISD spokeswoman, said under a bond, Bonham Academy is getting some major renovations, a new building and a new playground.
And for that playground expansion, the district purchased property at 114 Cedar Street, which is located directly behind the campus.
Initially, SAISD planned to move the house on the property to a different location, but a group looking to preserve the historic home approached the board about using it as part of the expansion.
"Our original plan was not to utilize the home, but to move the house if possible," said Price. "Either way, whether we move it or not, we have additional space from the Cedar Street property, which is about 15,000 square feet. The house is a little more than 2,000."
However, after some parents voiced concerns about safety with the home, the district is having it tested for traces of drugs.
"There's no visible signs of that," said Price. "But because we've heard concerns, we do need to have surface testing for any chemical residue to determine if there is a problem or not."
Steven Gonzales, whose niece attends Bonham Academy, said anything the school district can do to expand and improve the campus is a good move and that he would also be for utilizing the old house on Cedar.
"I think that's amazing," said Gonzales. "I think they should do it. I think they should use tax dollars to go back to the kids."
Price said they do not have an exact time frame of when that testing will be done, but as soon as they get the results, they will share them with the community.
As for the group, which wants the house on Cedar Street restored, they are scheduled to go before the board with more details about it sometime next month.
