SAPD: Burglars break into cars at Hilton resort on Westover Hills Boulevard
5 guests report losing valuables to car burglars at Hilton hotel on Westover Hills Blvd.
Burglars targeted at least five vehicles at the Hilton San Antonio Hill Country Hotel & Spa on Westover Hills Boulevard at some time before daybreak Tuesday, San Antonio police said.
Officer responded to the first call around 7:30 a.m., and once they were there, they soon began to find more victims. They said the burglars smashed windows on the vehicles, then took items of value from inside.
Norman and Mashala Koehn, who were wrapping up a romantic anniversary getaway at the resort, woke up to the bad news. Someone had shattered their rear driver’s side window and taken off with two GPS systems they had on the back seat.
“We had a Bible in our glove box and that was thrown on the floor. They could've at least taken that," said Mashala Koehn.
Ironically, the couple had parked in a space right below a sign that read: "San Antonio Police Dept. says… Remove it, Lock it or Lose it."
While it was intended to be a warning to hotel guests, Norman Koehn admits he didn’t heed it, or the last-minute words or wisdom from his wife.
"She told me before. She said, 'You should take the GPS’,” he recalled. “In today's world, everybody has a GPS. I wouldn't think that was such a valuable thing.”
Police said it appeared the criminals were looking for anything that they could easily grab before making a getaway.
They did not, however, say what was missing from any of the other vehicles that were burglarized.
In spite of the Koehn’s bit of bad luck, San Antonio Police Department figures show the number of car burglaries — both in that neighborhood and throughout the city — is actually down this year compared to last year.
