A woman suspected of driving drunk was arrested after she crashed a car with five children inside, San Antonio police said.
The driver, identified as Patricia Hernandez, 36, has been charged driving while intoxicated.
Police received a call for an accident that involved a pedestrian around 9:30 p.m. Sunday near South New Braunfels and Pecan Valley.
Officers arrived and said Hernandez was backing up her car when she mistakenly hit the gas pedal and drove through a fence at San Antonio State Hospital, then crashed in a ditch.
Police found the children -- a 2-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, a 7-year-old boy, an 8-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl unharmed, and said a male passenger had stumbled out of the vehicle before the crash.
Police believe the passenger was intoxicated as well, but he was not expected to face charges.
San Antonio police spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez said like all drunk drivers, Hernandez put many lives at risk when she decided to get behind the wheel Sunday night.
"You not only put yourself in danger, you put passengers in the vehicle that are in danger and other people that are on the streets whether in a vehicle or pedestrian traffic,” said Gutierrez. “Everyone is in danger when you make that choice to get behind the wheel when you've been drinking."
Hernandez was being held at the Bexar County Jail. Her bond was set at $25,000.
