SAN ANTONIO -

The roommate of a woman accused of leaving her two daughters home alone said one of the girls came close to suffering serious injuries.
Graciela Maldon said she called police Sunday morning after waiting more than 10 hours for the mother of the children to return home.
When she did arrive, Esmeralda Trejo, 22, was arrested on two counts of endangering a child.
An arrest warrant affidavit stated that Trejo left her 4- and 5-year old daughters home alone for an unknown period of time Saturday night while she went out to a bar.
Maldon said when she returned home around 12:30 a. m. Sunday, she found the children alone inside the apartment in the 300 block of Mickle John Street. A neighbor had summoned her there by phone her after hearing the children crying inside the apartment, she said.
Maldon said she also discovered that the 5 year old had suffered minor burns on her hands while trying to cook food for herself.
The affidavit stated that after she sent a text message to Trejo, asking about her whereabouts, Trejo replied that she was at a bar and would be home soon. When she hadn't shown up more than 10 hours later, the roommate called police, the affidavit stated.
As of noon Monday, Trejo remained in jail with bonds totaling $10,000.
Maldon said Child Protective Services took custody of both children.
