Matthew Taylor Mays, 20, remains in jail after being charged with the alleged abuse of his newborn son, an incident that San Antonio police said caused a skull fracture and breaks to both of the infant’s legs.
Mays was arrested Monday on a charge of injury to a child.
An arrest warrant affidavit stated that police began investigating last Thursday after the mother of Rylan Mays, who will be two months old next week, brought her newborn to Methodist Children’s Hospital.
The baby was experiencing swelling to his head, the affidavit stated.
Doctors examined the baby and told police that he suffered a fractured skull and breaks to both legs, according to the affidavit. It also stated that doctors said the injuries appeared to be consistent with abuse, rather than any type of fall.
Police said while Mays refused a request to speak with detectives, the baby’s mother told them he had given her two different stories about how their son was injured. The affidavit stated that the mother said Mays told her the baby had fallen off a bed, then said he dropped him on the kitchen floor while fixing a bottle.
The affidavit stated that Rylan Mays remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The news is in stark contrast to a birth announcement posted July 26 on an internet website called “Webshots.”
A woman named Kelli Mays posted a picture of the newborn, swaddled in a blanket and wearing a yellow hat. Beneath it, she wrote that Rylan Conner Mays is her “first grandchild.”
Kelli Mays could not be reached for comment.
Jail records show Matthew Mays was still in jail as of noon Tuesday with bond set at $75,000.
