Wounded warriors and their families got a special thank you from the San Antonio Police Department.
Members of the department's Problem Oriented Policing (POP) unit and HEB teamed up to treat the families to a barbecue dinner at the Warrior and Family Support Center.
"It's nice to give them and their families a night off, where we can provide them a home cooked meal," said Sgt. Tom Alonzo with the San Antonio Police Department's POP Unit. "We get to interact with them and let them know that we still support and really appreciate all that they've done for us."
Aprel Landen said her husband was injured in Iraq and now that he's recovering at the Warrior and Family Support Center, having activities like Saturday's barbecue dinner and Halloween party is comforting.
"It just gives us the opportunity to get out of the hospital," said Landen. "It gives our daughter something to do and it's just nice to know that people still care."
Specialist Nathaniel Davis said after his deployment to Afghanistan, doctors found large tumors in his back. Davis said although it is painful to move around sometimes, being around his fellow soldiers and all the volunteers definitely lifts his spirits.
"It actually gets me out of the cave I call my room," said Davis. "It actually gets me out into the sunshine, the friendly faces, the people's smiles, the happy faces. It's actually pretty awesome for me."
Alonzo said Saturday that they are looking forward to host even more events for wounded warriors throughout the year.
