SAN ANTONIO -

San Antonio police Officer Robert Esquivel clearly remembers the night his son, Officer Jonathan Esquivel, almost lost his life.

"When I got the call, I wasn't even here. I was in Las Vegas," said the elder Esquivel, one of five family members who have served for SAPD.  "And you get the call that a parent never wants to get."

His son was hit by a truck while working an earlier traffic accident on Loop 410 near Summit Parkway on the night of Feb. 19.

"What I was told was that they (didn't) think he was going to make it," said Esquivel.

Ten surgeries later, including a total ankle reconstruction and seven plates in his hips, the younger Esquivel is slowly taking steps to recovery.

"Today, we got the OK that he can start putting five to 10 pounds of pressure on his feet," said Robert. "He's young, energetic, 28 years old, runs, lifts weights and that, so I think his health had a lot to do with him being able to survive what he did because he did get hit at about 50 miles per hour."

Jonathan plans to return to the force but will spend at least another four to five months in rehab before returning home.

"It's been very painful for him and all of us," said Robert. "He knows he's got a long road to recovery but he's willing to do it."

His two young children now visit him daily but didn't see him until six weeks after the accident because their Dad didn't want them to see him hooked up to tubes.

Robert said they finally made the decision to take the kids to the hospital after a classmate told them their dad was dead.

"The day that we brought the boys and decided, 'We're going to bring them in to see you John,' they took all the tubes out," Robert said. It wasn't by us asking, it just happened."

The officer that Jonathan was assisting that night has organized a barbecue plate sale and raffle for Saturday, May 19, at VFW Post 76, 10 10th Street, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will also be live music.

Money raised will go towards necessary renovations to Esquivel's home to help him continue his rehabilitation.
