SAWS station catches fire
A fire at a San Antonio Water System Station on Sunday has caused an estimated $100,000 worth of damage and fire officials said it may take a few weeks to fix.
It was around noon on Sunday, when a fire crew driving back from a meeting downtown actually spotted the smoke coming from the SAWS pumping station at the Olmos Basin and responded right away.
Fire officials said the chlorine at the station was not effected and that they put the fire out fairly quickly, but still, crews had to deal with a lot of smoke.
"On the inside of the pump station, several of the units had caught on fire," said Battalion Chief Brooke Hildreth with the San Antonio Fire Department. "The firefighters made entry, put the fire out. It took us a little while to get the smoke out of the building because it's a two story, plus a basement."
Hildreth said nobody was inside the pump station at the time and no one was hurt.
Although four large electrical panels were damaged in the fire, there was no disruption of water service and the station never shut down because there was another working bank to produce power to run the water, she said.
As far as the cause, Hildreth told KSAT that it just looks like the panels got overheated and that it may take crews a couple of weeks to get things fixed.
