June 1 is a very important day on the calendar -- especially if you love donuts.
The first day of June is National Donut Day and San Antonians couldn't help but celebrate.
Krispy Kreme got into the celebration by giving away a free donut to each customer who stepped up to the store counter and said, "Happy National Donut Day.!"
Rob Morin, manager of the Krispy Kreme on Interstate 10 at DeZavala Road said there was a stready stream of customers all day. Morin said there is just something about that little round-coated cake.
"It's got to be the smell, the taste, it just hits all your senses once you bite into it," Morin said. "People go crazy."
Larry Wrenn said he loves donuts because of the "round goodness, that's what it is."
"I had to come and pass on my doctors orders to stay away from carbs and sugars for one day," said Luisa Sanchez a Krispy Kreme customer.
Donut lover Ralph Wiles was asked if donuts deserved a national day of recognition and he said, "I think they do."
There's actually a legitimate reason for the recognition. The day was started by the Salvation Army in 1934 as to way to raise money for the needy.
