SAN ANTONIO -

Less than an hour after fire crews arrived at the Castelewood Condos Thursday, the San Antonio chapter of the American Red Cross had a make shift command center set up at a neighboring apartment complex to begin relief efforts.

The organization helped more than a dozen residents who lost their condos in the afternoon fire.

“They’re devastated. They’ve lost everything they had,” said Red Cross volunteer Tandy Medford. “By them being able to talk to us, it helps.”27 units were destroyed in the fire.

The Red Cross provided victims with “comfort kits”, which include enough toiletries to last them for a few nights.

Residents unable to find their own temporary housing were put up in a nearby Motel 6.

“They helped us a lot with food, with money, with clothes, with a place to live,” said Jose Fernandez, who lost his condo in the fire. “It’s kind of hard right now to move on.”

The Salvation Army also provided relief to victims in the form of vouchers for clothing, and furniture.
