SAN ANTONIO -

Deacon Pat Rodgers, director of communications for the Archdiocese of San Antonio, said employees felt a rush of emotion at the announcement of a new pope Wednesday.

"It was tears, it was applause, it was, 'Yahoo,'" said Rodgers. "There wasn't a quiet, silent moment until the Pope called is to pray."

From Argentina, Pope Francis I is the first to be chosen from the Americas and the first pope selected outside of Europe in a millennium.

"It's a whole different perspective, a country a whole ocean away. It's a whole different people. And I think that the culture and his life experience will be different than any other pope we've had," said Rodgers.
