Two men were arrested by San Antonio police officers on the city’s South side Thursday evening for their alleged involvement in a series of thefts at local cemeteries.
Sgt. Javier Salazar said the suspects, identified as Nelson Shilling, 50, and Michael Alvarado, 43, were caught with several brass flower vases at the Mission Burial Park located in the 1700 Block of S.E. Military Drive.
Salazar said the arresting officers were called to the cemetery to check out a suspicious persons report. When they located the suspects, the officers found the stolen vases inside a car that belonged to one of the suspects.
Property Crimes detectives from the South Side substation determined the two men were the same suspects that had been stealing metal vases from other cemeteries over the past few months.
“The detectives were able to pull up information that linked these two suspects to up to $12,000 in possible thefts of these brass vases, similar brass vases from other cemeteries,” Salazar said.
It’s believed the men had been doing this for several months and were selling the vases to local metal buyers for several hundred dollars apiece.
Salazar said metal theft is a state jail felony and the fact that these guys allegedly stole hundreds of the vases , they will be facing lengthy sentences.
