SAN ANTONIO -

A woman caring for the 2-year-old daughter of a friend who was in prison is facing the possibility of going to prison herself.

Sarah Sifuentes, 35, is charged with serious bodily injury to a child by omission. The charge is a first-degree felony and carries a maximum punishment of life in prison.

An emergency medical technician who responded to a call at Sifuentes’ apartment in October 2008 said Cyleste Gonzales, 2, was pale and unresponsive when he arrived.

“She had what appeared to be some type of bruising all over her ... arms, chest, abdomen and forehead,” said EMT Stacey Casburn.

He said her arm also appeared “distorted.”

“We touched her arm and it felt like she might have had a fracture,” Casburn said.

Casburn said Sifuentes told him that the child had been sick and they had given her medicine and placed her in a carseat.

When she returned a short while later, she said she found the child unresponsive.

Testimony will continue on Wednesday in Judge Philip Kazen’s 227th District Court.
