Sarah Sifuentes, the woman convicted in the death of her friend's 2-year-old daughter, Ceyleste Rodrigues, was sentenced to 19 years in prison by a San Antonio jury.
Her voice choked with emotion, Sifuentes pleaded for mercy during the punishment phase of her trial on Tuesday afternoon.
“Please have mercy on me,” Sifuentes, 35, asked the jury. “I’m asking you to please consider probation for me, for my children and for my family.”
Instead, she was sentenced to prison Tuesday night. On Friday, the jury found her guilty of injury to a child by omission.
Rodrigues died on Oct. 26, 2008, while in Sifuentes' care, prosecutors said. Doctors testified that the child died from severe abdominal injuries.
Emergency medical personnel also testified that the little girl had bruises and cuts all over her body when she was rushed to the hospital from Sifuentes’ home.
Sifuentes had been caring for the child while the child’s mother, Crystal Soto, was serving time in prison on drug charges.
