A festival will be held this weekend to raise funds for the families of fallen San Antonio police officers, and to honor their memory.
The second annual “Memorial Festival and Car Show” will be held on Saturday, March 9, at the San Antonio Police Academy grounds located at 12200 SE Loop 410.
“In 2011, we had an officer killed in the line of duty, Stephanie Brown,” said Deputy Chief Janae Florance, with the San Antonio Police Department. “She left behind a 1-year old daughter. So, a group of female officers came together and said we want to do something to stay in touch with Audrey, the daughter.”
Since then, the female officers and others within the force have organized the event, which raises funds for fallen officers’ families to travel to Washington, D.C. for National Police Week.
Last year, the funds sent the family of Ofc. Stephanie Brown to the event. This year, proceeds will send the family of Ofc. Edrees Mukhtar, who died in 2012.
“It's really a fun day, we have things for the kids, we have a petting zoo, pony rides, lots of carnival type games,” said Florance. “I would hope the community would want to participate in honoring the families and helping them remember, and helping to show love from San Antonio, that we appreciate the sacrifice their loved one made.”
There is a tax-deductible donation of $10 at the door. Admission for children is $5.
