A San Antonio area Marine killed in Afghanistan last year now has a scholarship in his name at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
Lance Cpl. Benjamin Schmidt attended TCU for three semesters before he joined the military. He died in combat last October.
His father, Dr. David Schmidt, said his son loved TCU so much, he left the school in his will.
The will stated should anything happen to Benjamin Schmidt, half of his life insurance which amounted to $200,000, would go to establish a scholarship in the TCU Department of History.
"He had the foresight to think what do I really want to do with my life should it end, and had the foresight to think let's do something for TCU," David Schmidt said. "It had to be a graduate student. I said, 'Why a graduate student?' and he said, 'I'm not going to invest in a freshman like me.'"
The first scholarship will be awarded in the fall. David Schmidt says the family will continue to raise funds for the scholarship and they have already raised close to $500,000.
