Security guard shoots suspect at downtown area restaurant
Police say same man involved in three robbery related incidents
A suspected armed robber took two bullets as he tried to shoot it out with a security guard at a popular downtown area restaurant early Saturday morning.
Police say Johnny Reyes had already robbed or attempted to rob a nightclub and a hotel before getting shot.
It all started late Friday night at the Leaping Lizard Bar in the 300 block of E. Commerce.
Police say the 29 year-old Reyes shot a man he tried to rob inside that bar.
The victim is identified as 33 year-old James Montes and was in critical condition at SAMMC.
According to employees at Leaping Lizards, Montes underwent successful surgery this afternoon. Montes is the bar owner and manager.
Investigators say Reyes then went to the St. Anthony Hotel. They say he pulled a gun on a clerk at that hotel.
Police are not sure if he got away with any money.
Then about half an hour later they say Reyes showed up at the popular Pico de Gallo restaurant just west of downtown.
They say he attempted to rob the place, but was confronted by a security guard.
Police say Reyes tried to shoot the guard, but apparently his gun malfunctioned.
The guard then shot Reyes in the head and abdomen.
EMS transported him to University Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
Police are now working to piece the case together.
They say they will charge Reyes with three counts of aggravated robbery.
