Shavano Park pulls gun ordinance
Three weeks after the Shavano Park city council passed an ordinance regulating the discharge of fire arms in city limits, it unanimously voted it down after the mayor asked that it reconsider the measure because of the public objection to it.
"There was heated debate and I believe they came to the right decision in the end," said Mayor David Marne who began the process by filing a statement of objections days after the original vote. "This was not the will of the people and the people spoke."
A total of 26 residents spoke on the issue during the citizens to be heard segment of the council meeting with 22 of them speaking in opposition.
Many cited state laws they felt were adequate for gun safety and others questioned how restrictive the law would be with regards to kids using BB guns in their backyards.
Alderwoman Michelle Bunting Ross motioned to amend the ordinance to remove air guns and bow and arrows from the restricted list but that was voted down shortly before the original ordinance was voted out.
"The intent was safety and it's always been safety and it's something that's going to have to get resolved sooner or later, whether it's this council or future councils," said Alderman Bruce Baumann.
