Steve Dobles is lucky to be alive after being shot during a robbery outside his Northeast Side home Monday evening.
Dobles, an Air National Guard master sergeant, said he walked outside his home in the 14500 block of Perpetual to bring in the recycle bin from the street when two men approached him.
"They asked me for gas money, initially," Dobles said during an interview Tuesday. "I said I had no money, and they stole my phone instead."
The men then told Dobles to get on his knees, and that's when he thought they wanted to kill him. But Dobles refused to kneel, and ran instead, making it to his front door before being shot through the glass.
Despite being faced with death, however, Dobles refused to let the robbers into his home, because his children were inside.
"I would take a bullet in a second before I'd let anyone harm my children," Dobles said.
After the shots were fired, the suspects took off and were apprehended a short time later.
The suspects, Alred Torres, Andres Juarez, and David Cuevas were charged with aggravated robbery for the incident involving Robles and others during a short crime spree.
