SAN ANTONIO -

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center started sending blood and platelets to West hours after the explosion.

"We have already received some calls and that's something just naturally that people want to help out. We always encourage people to be regular donors, so that they know what type they are, and when the call comes out, we're ready for emergencies," said Carmen Davila, vice president of corporate communication for the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center.

They are being asked to send O negative blood and platelets, and want to focus resources on collecting what is needed.

"We want to assess and manage the blood supply as appropriately as we can, and so we're in contact with them to see what their requirements are, see what their daily needs are. As they transfuse blood, they will tell us what type they need," Davila said.

Community members are encouraged to schedule an appointment by calling 210-731-5590.

Donors can make their appointment at any of the eight neighborhood donor rooms in San Antonio, New Braunfels and Victoria.

Donors must show identification, and must be 16 years old and weigh 120 pounds (with a parental consent form), or at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds, and must be in good general health.
