EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — A South Texas man sentenced to 60 years in prison after being convicted of murder asked the victim's son for forgiveness while being escorted out of the courtroom.

Sergio Gomez was sentenced Thursday in the shooting death last year of Alejandro Davila following dinner at Davila's Edinburg home.

Gomez told Davila's son, also named Alejandro, "I would like to ask for your forgiveness." The two men shook hands and briefly embraced before Gomez was escorted away.

The son told The Monitor in McAllen he wished Gomez the best, adding, "someday I'll be able to forgive him."

Testimony showed Gomez left the home after a scuffle involving another person, then returned with a pistol.

Gomez's attorney said Gomez acted in self-defense after the elder Davila threatened him with a knife.
