SAN ANTONIO -

This past weekend was a roller-coaster weekend for Mack Brown and the University of Texas Longhorns football team.

First came the unusual story that new offensive coordinator and Texas legend Major Applewhite had an affair with a student trainer at the Fiesta Bowl in 2009.

The story probably won’t have any long-term effects on the team or Major, but it does come five days before National Signing Day.

Speaking of National Signing Day, UT already has a pretty weak class this season, ranked No. 21 by rivals.com. In fact, Texas only had one five-star recruit: A’Shawn Robinson.

Well, this weekend, UT learned that Robinson will be signing with Alabama, not Texas, even though he’s been committed to Texas for a year now.

And to make matters worse, Texas redshirt Freshman QB Connor Brewer was arrested in Austin for public intoxication and using a fake ID.

To Brewer’s credit, he picked a great week to be arrested, since most of the fan base is talking about Major and losing Robinson.

With National Signing Day approaching on Feb. 6, this is not the time for the wheels to be coming off the program. Mack Brown needs to look in the mirror, and get his ship back on track.

Now, he could very well turn this bad weekend into a really good signing day. Texas is hoping to add a few more recruits to the 2013 class, and if he can land a few of these prospects, the Mack Brown ship looks like it might make it through these turbulent waters.

Dontre Wilson, an Oregon commit from Desoto, Texas, visited the 40 Acres this weekend, and the 'Horns are hoping he decides to stay home in Texas now that Chip Kelly has left Oregon. Ohio State is also after this kid, and seems to be UT’s biggest challenge for Mr. Wilson.

Another unexpected recruit visited Texas this weekend, defensive end Frank Herron, a kid out of Memphis that is committed to LSU. This visit came out of nowhere. Nobody even thought the 'Horns were on this kid’s radar, and if Mack can steal this kid from LSU, this would be a huge feather in his cap.

And with A’Shawn Robinson gone, the 'Horns desperately need defensive tackle Andrew Billings from Waco, Texas.  Billings has narrowed his choices down to UT, TCU and Baylor.

So even though this week -- and this past year -- has been rough on Mack and the gang, Wednesday’s signing day could turn the tide, or it could be another pot hole on Mack’s road back to the top.
