San Antonio State Rep. Lyle Larson says Texas Gov. Rick Perry spent millions of taxpayer dollars on security as he travelled around the country in his failed 2011 presidential bid.
Larson has filed a bill defining how travel security for elected should be handled in the future.
“If it’s state business, we should pay for it,” Larson said. “If it’s personal or political, they should reimburse the state.”
Larson said that Perry spent $3.7 million on security while running for president.
Larson, a Republican, said it was important that the be filed by a Republican since he and Perry are both Republicans.
“If a Democrat files a bill, it looks like political retribution,” Larson said. “I look at it from the standpoint that we need to reform this ourselves.”
The reform is in order, Larson said, in view of the deep budget cuts made during the last legislative session.
“We made cuts in health care, education and infrastructure across the board, and then the governor goes out and runs for president and it costs us $3.7 million dollars,” Larson said. “We’ve got some mixed messaging going on."
