In a meeting last month, the General Land Office, who assumed ownership of the Alamo last year, made the decision to permit alcohol at catered, after-hour events at Alamo Hall and its patio.
However, after a huge outcry following the news of the new policy, General Land Office Commissioner Jerry Patterson made a trip to the Alamo grounds on Friday to explain their decision.
Patterson said he believes there is some misinformation out in the public about the rules that they changed and that's why people are so upset.
"I think the main concern is driven by misinformation," said Patterson. "I think there was some concept or some belief that we were going to be having a vendor here selling alcohol for the purpose of raising money for the Alamo."
Patterson said Friday that the decision wasn't about making money. instead, it was about opening up the Alamo to more people.
He said in the past, not allowing caterers to serve alcohol at after-hours events at Alamo Hall was something that did turn people away.
"We are going to start serving alcohol in this patio and in that building, which are not within the original footprint as it existed in 1836," said Patterson.
But while Alamo Hall and its patio are not within the original boundaries, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas still don't believe alcohol should be served there and that it's more about the standards for the entire complex.
"It's within in their right to do that," said Daughters of the Republic President General Karen Thompson. "But we just feel like it's the wrong decision for them to make because it doesn't show the respect that this site gives."
"At Gettysburg, after hours events are allowed to have alcohol," said Patterson. "On the ... Battleship Missouri and Pearl Harbor overlooking the Arizona Monument, alcohol is allowed and I do not believe alcohol itself is disrespectful."
The General Land Office Commission also said Friday that they will have extra security on site for these after hours evebts, catered events with alcohol and they expect to start permitting this by the end of the month.
