SAN ANTONIO -

A North Side apartment resident helped police find a methamphetamine lab Friday.

The resident at the Rayo Del Sol Apartments in the 7200 block of Blanco Road smelled something strange coming from an apartment in Building Three and called police.

When police checked it out, they found the lab.

"By normal standards, I guess it would be considered a small- to medium-sized lab," said Sgt. Javier Salazar of the San Antonio Police Department.

Salazar said, no matter how small, a meth lab is a big deal.

"This was probably a potentially hazardous situation for a lot of these residents. Sure is a cause for concern," Salazar said.

It took a specialized group of narcotics officers several hours to clean up the lab and safely dispose of the chemicals.

"It's a very volatile type mix of chemicals, and you have to be trained in how to recognize it and how to handle it correctly," Salazar said.

No one was in the apartment when police arrived and as of Friday afternoon, no arrests have been made.
